This work was included in the gallery’s 2021 summer presentation, POPCORN by Joji Nakamura, the artist’s first solo show in the United States. The exhibition’s title comes from “Mother Popcorn”, a song recorded by James Brown in 1969.

Throughout his career, the Nakamura has employed a painting technique using his hands to apply acrylic directly on canvas. The aritst frequently cites music as inspiration when painting, and the tempo and mood of the songs can be seen in the finger strokes of his abstract work.

Nakamura was born in 1974 in Chiba, Japan, and currently lives and works in Yokohama. He has shown extensively throughout Japan, including at Bookmarc (Marc Jacobs Omotesando, Tokyo, Japan); Clear Gallery Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan); The Container (Tokyo, Japan). He was also recently included in a group show at Marian Cramer Projects (Amsterdam, Netherlands), and has been featured at Asia Now art fair in Paris, France.
